Background of the study
Digital neologisms have become a defining feature of online communication, reflecting the rapid pace of cultural and social change. In Nigeria, Twitter hashtag movements have emerged as influential platforms for lexical innovation. Users employ hashtags not only to categorize content but also to coin new words and expressions that encapsulate evolving social and political sentiments (Ibrahim, 2023). These neologisms often spread quickly, gaining widespread acceptance and altering conventional language norms. This study investigates the emergence and propagation of digital neologisms within Nigerian Twitter hashtag movements. It explores the processes of word formation—such as blending, clipping, and affixation—and examines the sociocultural drivers behind these lexical innovations (Okafor, 2024). By analyzing a corpus of tweets associated with popular hashtag movements, the research aims to document the dynamic nature of digital neologisms and assess their impact on traditional language structures, offering insights into the transformative power of digital communication (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although digital neologisms are a prominent aspect of Nigerian Twitter discourse, there is limited research on the mechanisms underlying their creation and dissemination. Existing studies tend to focus on the sociopolitical impact of hashtags rather than on the linguistic innovations they trigger (Chukwu, 2023). This gap hampers our understanding of how new lexical items are formed and normalized in digital spaces, limiting theoretical development in the field of digital linguistics (Ibrahim, 2023).

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the role of digital neologisms in shaping Nigerian social media language. The findings will contribute to our understanding of online lexical innovation and inform theoretical models of digital language evolution, benefiting linguists and digital media scholars (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to Nigerian Twitter hashtag movements; it does not extend to other platforms or offline language practices.
